CertiK Reports Cryptocurrency Thefts Soared to $370M in January

A total of $370.3 million in cryptocurrency was lost to exploits and scams in January. This constitutes the largest monthly theft volume in 11 months and reflects a nearly fourfold increase year-on-year.

The crypto security firm CertiK stated this past Saturday that while there were 40 incidents, a single social engineering scam was responsible for roughly $284 million of the losses.

A substantial portion, specifically $311.3 million, was stolen via phishing scams throughout the month. This highlights the continued effectiveness of these tactics for malicious actors.

January’s figure is the highest since February 2025, when attackers stole around $1.5 billion, primarily from a $1.4 billion hack on the Bybit exchange. Compared to January 2025’s $98 million, the latest total is a rise of over 277%. It also represents a 214% increase from the $117.8 million stolen in December, CertiK confirmed.
