B.C. to Crypto Miners: Find Power Elsewhere
British Columbia is making its temporary pause on new crypto mining a permanent ban. The province has legislated a complete prohibition on connecting new cryptocurrency mining operations to the public power utility, BC Hydro.
The reason: crypto mining doesn’t create enough long-term jobs or public revenue to justify its massive energy consumption.
Instead, B.C. will reserve its clean electricity for traditional economic drivers like mining and natural gas, with further restrictions on data centers and AI coming in 2025.
