Citi has officially confirmed it is advancing plans for a full-scale crypto custody service, with executives targeting a 2026 public launch.

The bank is now in the final stages of developing a credible solution to hold native digital assets for institutional clients. According to a senior executive, the service will operate on a hybrid model, selectively using both Citi’s own technology and vetted third-party solutions.

This move is positioned to directly mitigate the counterparty and security risks that have long deterred major institutions from entering the crypto space, offering a protected pathway backed by one of the world’s largest custodians.
