Coinbase Under DoJ Investigation After User Data Leak

Following a security breach at Coinbase, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) has launched an investigation.

The breach involved leaking internal documents and data from a limited number of customer accounts, facilitated by bribing overseas support personnel.

Bloomberg broke the story, with confirmation from Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal.

Grewal stated:

“We have notified and are working with the DOJ and other US and international law enforcement agencies, and welcome law enforcement’s pursuit of criminal charges against these bad actors.”

The DoJ hasn’t publicly commented on the case yet. After a $20 million ransom demand from the perpetrators, Coinbase instead offered a reward for information leading to the culprits.

The breach affected names, addresses, emails, account balances, and partial Social Security numbers, but private keys and passwords were not accessed, and Prime accounts were secure.
