Vancouver Approves Motion to Become a Bitcoin City
At a city council meeting on Tuesday, the Canadian city of Vancouver unanimously passed a motion to explore becoming a Bitcoin-friendly city.
This decision, proposed by Mayor Ken Sim last month, would involve the integration of Bitcoin into the city’s financial strategies, such as allowing taxes and fees to be paid in Bitcoin and potentially converting a portion of the city’s financial reserves into the cryptocurrency.
The motion highlighted that having a portion of reserves in Bitcoin could help protect Vancouver’s purchasing power against the volatility, debasement, and inflation of traditional currencies.
It also instructed city staff to assess and report back to the council by the end of Q1 2025 on the feasibility and potential benefits of this approach. The move is seen as a way to enhance the city’s financial portfolio and ultimately benefit its taxpayers.
