Bitcoin Inscriptions Are Included in US National Vulnerability Database

The NVD (US National Vulnerability Database) has raised concerns about the potential security threat posed by “inscriptions” in the Ordinals protocol to the network of the leading cryptocurrency.

The NVD warning highlights that certain versions of Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Knots allow BRC-20 to bypass limitations on transaction data transfer by disguising it as code.

When a vulnerability is listed in the NVD, it means that it has been studied, categorized, and determined to be of significant importance to the public.

An “inscription” refers to additional information that can be entered into a specific satoshi.

This can range from digital media, such as images or text. As these inscriptions are permanently added to the blockchain, their volume increases with the creation of new Bitcoin NFTs.

Exploiting this vulnerability could lead to non-transactional data and spam being distributed on the network, negatively impacting efficiency and transaction fees.
